I'm getting AMPED

Post by Splash One on Sat 17 Sep 2011, 7:33 pm

So I got access to new land this year and my father and I have been dove hunting on it a few times.... the dove hunting is beyond horrid...but there are roughly 10 family groups of 20 or more crows roosting in a quarter mile area, and it's not even cold yet.... We have decided to leave them be for now, mostly watching where they land to eat, what trees the stage in... and where to dig.

I was goofing around this morning when we went to leave, and I started hammering on a hand call I made and a mob came rushing over the trees and out over open field.... I counted 45 before there were so many I just stopped counting.....

I plan to do some crow sniping before I shot gun them.... Stay tuned for the video.

I'm getting AMPED

Splash, I am glad for you for two reasons. One, you have some new land to cruise around on and two, you have some crows to play with. A quick observation, be careful calling your new found crows for fun. Each time you do so they hear your call and find nothing when they come. Remember they are smarter than we are.

If your crows are like ours in NC they will be on the move with the next cold front looking for a new food source, not so much in early summer, but now with cold weather approaching they will move. My advice to you is: If they are there shoot them before they leave.

I haven't experienced our local crows leaving... usually the first week of October we start seeing migrators... then from there its just more and more crows... a couple years ago I drove into a field several hundred acres across....it had been recently turned... there were at least 1,500 crows picking at worms and bugs.. it was insane.. they let me drive right through them... but due to a situation that was beyond my control I had to leave them be and go home...

You are totally right about educating the crows... playing with them too much is a bad thing... but I've been working on a crow vocalization I made up and was testing it out... once I get it worked out I will share it with everyone...
