Finally knocked the dust off

Post by Splash One on Fri 11 Nov 2011, 9:42 pm

Well I got a super late start this year, but I went out for a late afternoon hunt the other day and bagged 11, for an hour of hunting... I got a new attachment for my camera and it changed the button commands... hence no video... too bad too had one landing in the decoys and it was shot about 20 feet out, and 3 feet off the deck... anyways got the buttons all figured out.. next hunt for me will be monday, but I will probably devote that to ducks as I have almost complete private access to 20 ponds... quack quack... maybe if I stay out of the flooded timber I can do a mixed bag... Im sure steel shot will drop a crow just as well as a duck...

steel shot for crows

Post by watch em fall on Sun 13 Nov 2011, 8:19 pm

Splash. Polishhammer and I used steel shot for crows a few times because they were on clearance. Our opinion is mixed, as long as we used a size larger pellet (6's instead of 7.5) and took 6-10 yards off your normal max. shooting distance they work well enough. However a lot of runners the farther the shot the less pure killing punch they had. But we always try to get them inside 20 yards no matter the ammo.

I hear ya...when I hunt crow.. if the shot isnt do'able...I dont pull the trigger... even if the crow circles me 5 times... I have the mind set that even if the crow figured out something was wrong... he doesnt associate this "wrong" with being hunted... and will be more apt to come back into a stand/setup much sooner then a crow that was shot at and missed.

Finally Knocked the Dust Off

Post by Gary on Mon 14 Nov 2011, 3:32 pm

You guys keep banging at em and push a few my way. My time is coming to wax a couple thousand in about 6 weeks. I don't wish you any bad luck but a cold winter for you will help push the birds coastal.
